Announcing the 2023 DFJ Transformative Justice Fellows

Debt Free Justice Announces 2023 Transformative Justice Fellows

Oakland, CA - Debt Free Justice is pleased to announce the selection of six fellows for the 2023 Transformative Justice Fellowship. The highly competitive application process resulted in the selection of Justin Allen, Mercy Badmos, John Broadway, Lupita Caraballo, Nykia Gatson, and Deshawn Leeth. Each fellow will work with Debt Free Justice partners to raise awareness about the impact of juvenile fees and fines.

The 2023 Transformative Justice Fellows were selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants from across the country. They each bring first-hand knowledge and lived experience about the long-term effects of fines and fees in the United States. The fellows will work with local and state partners to lead campaigns aimed at abolishing fines and fees. In addition, they will develop a participatory action research report that includes data collection, which will help shape future policy decisions.

“We are excited for this new fellowship cohort and the many endless possibilities of knowledge sharing and deepening our understanding of fees and fines ,” said Debt Free Justice co-coordinator, Miranda Sheffield.

The 2023 Transformative Justice Fellowship is part of Debt Free Justice's ongoing commitment to abolish fees and fines in the juvenile justice system.
