Getting Cops Out of Our Classrooms Toolkit
Angelica Jimenez and Miranda Sheffield at the National Center for Youth Law worked with students at the University of Iowa College of Law and Des Moines Black Liberation Movement on a project informed by young people who have advocated for the removal of school resource officers (SROs) in schools as well as experts and educators. The toolkit includes examples of successful advocacy efforts including in Des Moines that led to the removal of SROs from the public school system. It traces the history of police in schools, student survey data on their feelings of safety with the police presence in schools, identifies tactics in other police-free school campaigns, and highlights effective alternatives to police in schools.
