In 2023, Michigan passed a package of juvenile justice bills which eliminates most fees and costs associated with juvenile legal system involvement. In 2021, the Macomb County (North Detroit) Circuit Court eliminated youth fees for detention, housing in residential facilities, court-appointed attorney costs, and probation, and discharged $84 million in previously assessed fees.
