Freeman v. Riverside Webinar

On June 2, 2023, final approval of the settlement was granted in a class action lawsuit against Riverside County by parents and guardians affected by juvenile fees. The plaintiffs alleged that the County violated state and federal law in the collection of millions of dollars in fees from families with children in juvenile detention. They pointed out the County's failure to determine families' ability to pay and the lack of information provided about their right to challenge the fees.

In this webinar, Rebecca Miller from the Western Center on Law & Poverty and Hong Le from the National Center for Youth Law provide a summary of the case and its settlement. Delving into the limitations of the ability-to-pay approach, they examine its adverse impact on low-income families and marginalized communities. Additionally, they shed light on essential issues that advocates should closely monitor in their respective jurisdictions, empowering attendees to identify and take action against these inequitable and illegal practices.
