Webinar: DOJ Fines and Fees Guidance

The Debt Free Justice Campaign will host a webinar on July 6, 2023, 10:00 am PST/1:00 pm EST to discuss the Department of Justice's (DOJ) Dear Colleague Letter on Fines and Fees Guidance. The letter, issued in April 2023, outlines seven constitutional principles courts should follow when imposing and enforcing fines and fees. The guidance ensures that fines and fees do not disproportionately burden low-income individuals and communities of color. During the webinar, speakers Rachel Wallace from Berkeley Law Policy Advocacy Clinic, Jessica Feierman from Juvenile Law Center, and Miranda Sheffield from the National Center for Youth Law will provide an overview of the DOJ's letter, delve into constitutional issues surrounding fines and fees, discuss the specific protections granted, and outline the next steps for advocates.
